Setting up the tent
Munich locals and guests from all over the world, young and old, sit together swaying cheerfully on beer benches. Beer glasses clink together as revelers sing along to the Wiesn (Oktoberfest) hits. But few people actually know just how much effort takes place behind the scenes in order to organize the Oktoberfest. The building and dismantling of the massive beer tents alone add up to millions after rental fees for the space and tents are taken into account. Around 58 trucks per tent arrive in mid-July with the tent components. By November 1st, the festival grounds must look as if the Wiesn never happened. After the last beer is finished, the tables are folded up, glasses and dishes cleaned and packed into boxes, and kitchen equipment (including grills and bar tables) are polished to a high gloss, disassembled and taken away. Everything is neatly stored until the next Oktoberfest.
